Ross' Rad Read - Let's Get This Party Started

Soleil Moon Frye is incredibly creative. I don't think I know anyone who could come up with as many different crafts to make from the cardboard insert of a toilet paper roll than she has. Seriously.

She is also an awesome mom. I love her approach to parenting. I know this from reading her first book, contributing to her website and following her life online.

Both those qualities shine through in her new book, Let's Get This Party Started: DIY Celebrations for You and Your Kids to Create Together:

From backyard movie nights and safari adventures to holiday celebrations, slumber parties and beach luaus, this book has a celebration for every possible occasion. Or none at all. Because sometimes you just want to party. No reason needed. Each chapter covers one party theme and includes recipes, decorations, crafts, activities and games.

Unlike some DIY tutorials out there, the celebrations in Let's Get This Party Started seem attainable. They aren't Pinterest perfect, leaving you feeling you are in no way capable of even trying to duplicate the gorgeousness of it all.

They are real. Down to earth. Genuine. Like Soleil herself. She isn't saying, "Look at me and all the cool stuff I come up with." Rather, "Come on, let's have some fun together." Her goal is to inspire creativity in others and encourage families to enjoy life.

All the photos in Soleil's book were taken by her brother. And talent apparently runs in the family. I have admired Meeno Peluce's photography skills since he began contributing snapshots to Moonfrye.com. He has a whimsical style that expertly captures the exuberance, wonder and innocence of childhood.

The photos in the book are simply stunning. They add so much to the overall experience it provides. The ideas Soleil outlines come to life in front of your eyes. You can almost smell the paint and taste the S'mores on a stick.

Most of all, you can feel the fun. And you want to jump through the pages to join in.

My 4 year-old daughter was certainly entranced. She declared the advanced copy of the book I had received hers and took it up to her room. She began to look through the pages and make a mental list all the different parties from the book we are going to have, and in which order.

So I'd say we've got her upcoming 5th birthday party covered. Thanks, Soleil!
