I stumbled across Heather soon after I joined Twitter. Reading her popular blog helped me navigate the blogosphere. Just as it has helped so many. She is always willing to give of herself to support others.
Heather earned her success with her open, accessible and authentic style. The popularity of her blog, Theta Mom, has led to a host of business opportunities. To the point that she has basically built a new career for herself since becoming a mom.
Building an Online Brand
If people told me that at some point in my life I would be a work-at-home mom, I would have said they were nothing but crazy. Many moons ago, blogging was practically non-existent and I was basically just a kid out of college working full-time, earning my way toward a steadfast career. I wasn’t married and I certainly didn’t have children on my mind and never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that at some point, I would be leaving the career I loved so much behind to be home...with kids.
But, that’s what I chose to do nearly five years ago and I’ve never looked back because once I gave birth to my baby boy, the Earth shifted. And so did my priorities. My job was no longer my top priority – my family was. And I needed to make some real changes.
But like everything else in life, there is a trade-off. I needed to contribute to the family income so I returned back to work full-time and by the time I was pregnant with my second child, I was began working part-time from home. One would think that I would have stopped there, being that I was using my hard earned Master’s Degree and maintaining my resume as an Adjunct Professor. But there was still something gnawing at me – I needed to fill the void of the loneliness I experienced as a WAHM in those early months.
So, I started a blog.
Three solid years later, here I am. Still online, still doing my thing, even when my offline life gets tough or when I feel like just giving up.
I let go of the title of Adjunct Professor to continue to pursue my online dreams – and in the midst of doing so, I started my own company. Through it all, I’ve somehow managed to maintain my own personal blog which I’ve turned into an online brand. And a fabulous ebook will be launching this Fall.
Blogging is the reason I’ve been able to see my babies grow up.
I have my blog to thank for being able to attend Kindergarten parades, birthday parties and story time at school. It’s because of this job that I am my own boss and I make my own rules. I guess you can say I am lucky to have found a way to make this whole thing work, all the while being the best mom I know how to be.
And to any of the naysayers, all I can say is – at least I’m doing it my way.
