Big Girl School

I open the door of her bedroom and smile.

"Good morning, munchkin! How are you?"

Big smile. "Hi Mommy!"

"I heard that somebody in this house was starting preschool today. Do you know who it could be?"

She thrusts her hand into the air and shouts, "ME!"

Her excitement is palpable.

"Wow! This is a pretty special day! We'd better get you dressed and feed you a good breakfast."

We go into her closet, and she picks out her clothes. Then we head downstairs.

"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!"

The quick, heavy pitter pat of tiny feet running down the hallway into the kitchen.

"I go big girl school today!"

He picks her up and holds her high in the air.

"You do? How can that be? How did you get to be a big girl so fast?"

More smiling.

Finally, the moment comes.

It's been three years in the making.

I'm worried about her fitting in.

About how the other kids will treat her because of her speech disorder.

But I know she is ready.

This is what is best for her.

There are no tears.

Just joy.

My big girl started preschool.

The journey continues...
